Michigan Supreme Court upholds gaming pacts

printer friendly
The Michigan Supreme Court on Friday rejected a constitutional challenge to four tribal-state gaming compacts.

By a 5-2 vote, the court said the Legislature was right to ratify the compacts through a resolution. The court said the Legislature's approval did not violate separation of powers.

The ruling is a victory for the tribes, whose casino projects have been delayed for several years since the compacts were signed in 1998. A group called Taxpayers of Michigan Against Casinos (TOMAC) has challenged the tribes in state and federal court.
