Pombo visit to South Dakota highlights tribal issues

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) visited South Dakota on Monday to spend time on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and to campaign for a fellow Republican.

Pombo used his visit to highlight concerns with the Endangered Species Act. He wants to rewrite parts of the law to provide more guidance on the use of scientific data.

Pombo and U.S. House candidate Larry Diedrich also focused on issues affecting tribal sovereignty. "There are a lot of treaty obligation issues we are dealing with," Pombo said, according to The Rapid City Journal. "There are Native American issues that literally for 100 years or more have been left on the table," Diedrich was quoted as saying. "We need to move off the dime."

Pombo is chairman of the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues.
