Some in New York opposed to Cayuga land claim deal
Wednesday, June 16, 2004

A proposal to settle the Cayuga land claim is drawing opposition from some in upstate New York.

The group Upstate Citizens for Equality is staging a three-day protest of the deal. The group wants more politicians to get involved.

The Cayuga Nation and Gov. George Pataki (R) announced the settlement last week. The tribe would drop its lawsuit in exchange for $247.9 million, gaming rights in the Catskills and a 10,00-acre reservation in its original treaty area.

The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma, also a party to the land claim, was not part of the settlement but continues to negotiate with Pataki's administration.
