Obama to celebrate Interior's 160th anniversary
Monday, March 2, 2009

President Barack Obama will celebrate the Interior Department's 160th anniversary on Tuesday.

Obama is set to join Interior Secretary Ken Salazar for an event in Washington, D.C. His appearance comes just three weeks after First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to Interior employees.

The event signals Obama's continued attention to Interior, often seen as one of the less prestigious of federal agencies. His fiscal year 2010 budget seeks $12 billion for the agency, including boosts for Indian education and law enforcement.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs turns 185 this year, having been formed prior to Interior. The BIA was part of the War Department.
