Yellow Bird: Rae Ann Red Owl a woman on the move
Thursday, March 5, 2009

"One of my perks as a journalist is getting to know the remarkable people in our area — one of them being Rae Ann Red Owl.

As she and I talked, I followed her amazing journey from the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota to a UND nursing program, then to the University of New Mexico School of Law in Albuquerque, N.M., and back to Pine Ridge, where she is now an associate judge.

She’s a woman on the move.

When I first interviewed Red Owl, it was at the suggestion of a staff member with UND’s Recruitment/Retention of American Indians into Nursing program, Liz Yellow Bird. Liz is my sister and someone you’ve probably read about in my columns a time or two. She thinks Red Owl is awesome."
