Dorreen Yellow Bird has left The Grand Forks Herald in North Dakota but will continue to publish a weekly column.

Yellow Bird, a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, was a reporter and columnist for the paper. The publisher said her move was in the works for some time.

“When another round of job cuts became necessary, we decided it was time," publisher Mike Jacobs said in the paper.

Yellow Bird said she will be going back to the reservation.
