Tribes protest against land-into-trust decision

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island led a protest on Saturday against the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar.

More than 100 people took part in a rally and march to the state capitol, The Providence Journal reported. It came about a month after the high court said that tribes that weren't "under federal jurisdiction" in 1934 can't follow the land-into-trust process.

That leaves the tribe unable to add land to its reservation. "Why is it that the Narragansetts are in exile in their own land," asked Domingo “Tall Dog” Monroe, a tribal member who spoke at the rally, the Journal reported.

Tribes are asking Congress to amend the Indian Reorganization Act to ensure all tribes can follow the land-into-trust process. The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the case on April 2.
