Alaska Natives oppose state attorney general pick
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Alaska Natives say Gov. Sarah Palin (R) picked the wrong person to serve as state attorney general.

The Alaska Federation of Natives, the Tanana Chiefs Conference and the Association of Village Council Presidents say attorney Wayne Anthony Ross is known for anti-subsistence views. Ross fought the state's rural preference law and he opposed federal subsistence regulations that favor Alaska Natives.

"It almost looked like she was rubbing our face in Anthony Ross's appointment.," Tim Towarak, co-chairman of the Alaska Federation of Natives, told The Anchorage Daily News of Palin's pick "Like rubbing our face on the ground, saying 'Here, take this.'"

Despite the Native opposition, lawmakers are likely to confirm him on April 16, the paper said.
