Petition seeks another vote on 'Fighting Sioux'

Members of the
Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe are circulating a petition to force a vote on the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the
University of North Dakota.
Archie Fool Bear, a nickname supporter, hopes the petition will convince the tribal leaders to schedule a referendum. The tribal council is currently on record as opposing the name.
But a change in leadership could affect the tribe's position. Former chairman Charles W. Murphy used to oppose the name but now supports it.
Murphy won the most votes in the tribe's recent primary. Depending on the outcome of a recount, he will face either incumbent chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder, who opposes the nickname, or Avis Little Eagle.
