Letter: Money aids Indian nursing program at UND
Friday, November 20, 2009

"On behalf of the UND College of Nursing, I want to extend our deepest appreciation to Sens. Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan and Rep. Earl Pomeroy, all D-N.D., for their tireless efforts in securing funding for our Quentin N. Burdick Indians into Nursing: Recruitment/Retention of American Indians into Nursing (RAIN) Program.

This funding will be used by the College of Nursing to continue this very successful program that is focused on recruiting, retaining and graduating American Indian nursing students. Participants come from across the nation to attend UND to participate in the program.

Since its inception in 1990, the UND RAIN program has graduated 139 baccalaureate nurses and 33 advanced practice nurses, more than any other nursing program in the U.S.

This funding will continue to provide our program with:

** Scholarships for students.

** Support services to assist students.

** Recruitment of American Indian/Alaskan Native students into nursing.

** Providing Indian communities with culturally competent nurses."
