Hawaii senators consider deal on recognition bill

Hawaii's two Democratic senators are considering ways to move a bill to recognize a Native Hawaiian government.

The Republican leadership is seeking Hawaii's votes on the energy bill. Sen. Daniel Inouye said he and Sen. Daniel Akaka could trade their support to gain passage of the recognition bill.

If a deal is worked out, Patricia Zell, Inouye's staff director on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, suggested the recognition bill could be attached to the energy bill. Or, the Republican leadership could promise to bring the bill to a floor vote.
