Federal appeals court to hear Cayuga land claim

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments today on the Cayuga land claim.
The Cayuga Nation of New York and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma have won a $247.9 judgment for 63,000 acres of stolen land. On appeal, the tribes contend the award should be $1.7 billion. They also want title to the land.
The state and two counties are appealing the award amount and the basis of the land claim. They say the tribes abandoned the land in question. They also say Congress ratified land sales to the state.
Attorneys involved in the case say a ruling from the 2nd Circuit is likely to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
