Cayuga Nation's plans for land worry some in village

Residents of a village in New York where the Cayuga Nation has purchased land are divided on what the tribe should be allowed to do with it.
The tribe bought a former auto parts store and wants to make improvements to it. In court papers, a conversion into a bingo hall is suggested, an idea that some residents support.
But the residents say the tribe should follow local laws and pay property taxes. The tribe says the land, within its land claim, area is free from state jurisdiction.
The village of Union Springs is opposing the tribe's plans in court. Officials in another town are opposing the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe's casino as well. That tribe is currently based in Oklahoma but is a party to the land claim, which is on appeal.
