School board supports recognition of Lumbee Tribe

The Robeson County School Board voted 7-2 on Monday to support the federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
About a third of the 24,000 students enrolled in Robeson County schools are members of the tribe, according to The Fayetteville Observer.
The school gets more than $2 million annually from the Department of Education for i Indian education programs.
The tribe is currently barred from seeking recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
One bill pending in Congress would recognize the tribe outright while the other would lift the BIA restriction.
