Yellow Bird: Ushering in a new phase of life
Wednesday, August 13, 2003
"I intended to visit Winnipeg this past weekend, but my plans changed when I learned of a big 80th birthday bash for my ailing aunt.
She's lived with diabetes since she was 48. We say that she spit in the face of that wicked disease for 32 years. My aunt has taken all that the disease can dish out for many years, but she is getting tired now. I saw that in her eyes last weekend.
She was sleeping on a chair in the living room when I got home. So I went outside on the front porch. It was a beautiful evening after a scorching day. The prairie wind was blowing cool, and birds were diving and calling to each other in the front yard. As I stood there looking out at the tawny prairie and deep blue lake, I thought how much she is like this land where she spent her life. It's late summer for her - the time when prairie goes back to the earth to rest for another season."
