Anderson firm took 40 percent of casino profits
Wednesday, October 22, 2003

A gaming management company once owned by Bureau of Indian Affairs nominee Dave Anderson took 40 percent of the profits from the Mille Lacs Ojibwe casino in the 1990s, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Federal auditors questioned the arrangement, according to the paper, because gaming management companies are usually only allowed to take up to 30 percent in profits from a tribe. But nothing happened and the tribe eventually took over management of the casino.

Anderson formed Grand Casinos with businessman Lyle Berman and attorney Stan Taube. The publicly-held company managed several casinos and once had stock worth more than $100 million, the paper reports.

The company was broken up and sold, part of which became Lakes Entertainment Inc. Berman continues to own Lakes and has projects pending before the BIA. Anderson says he will recuse himself from those dealings.

Anderson's hearing will take place at 10 a.m. today in Senate Dirksen Room 106. An audio feed will be provided by C-SPAN's Capitolhearings.org web site. The link for SD-106 is http://video.c-span.org:8080/ramgen/encoder/dirksen106.rm. Check http://www.capitolhearings.org for more information.

A video feed may not be available, according to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. A note posted on its web site at http://indian.senate.gov indicates there is a security issue affecting Internet users outside the Senate.
