Court orders Cayuga Nation to stop renovations

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Cayuga Nation of New York to stop renovations on a vacant building without first complying with local laws.
The tribe has purchased land in its ancestral territory. Relying on other court decisions, the tribe says the land is Indian Country and free from state and local jurisdiction. Local official contest the tribe's interpretation.
U.S. District Judge David Hurd issued a temporary restraining order barring the work. He has set a November 3 hearing in the case.
The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma was hit with a similar court order for land it has purchased in ancestral territory. A ruling in that case is expected in spring 2004.
