Lumbee Tribe going to polls to elect new chair

Members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will go to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new chairman and 21 council seats.
Chairman Milton Hunt, who was elected in 2000, is not seeking re-election. He has led the tribe as it seeks full federal recognition. The Senate Indian Affairs Committee last week advanced a bill to recognize the tribe.
James Goins, Jerry McNeill, Lee Sampson, Juanita Strickland and Ruth Dial Woods are running to replace Hunt. Goins lost the 2000 election to Hunt by less than 500 votes.
