Column: Hostility at land claim forum
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2002

"I do not often spring to the defense of beleaguered public officials. Nor scold errant citizens.

But when the two clashed last week I had to admire Wyandotte County's Unified Government attorney Hal Walker for his handling of a hostile crowd with far more grace and patience than it deserved.

Funny thing is, Walker and this crowd agreed on just about everything that was being discussed. All were on the same side of a lawsuit. Walker and three other lawyers were there to help.

Inexplicably, however, the crowd heckled and jeered. Questions from the audience suggested few had been paying attention to the program. People seemed to have no clue that Walker and their local government were on their side. . ."
