Delaware tribal ties to Penn. uncontested
TUESDAY, MAY 20, 2003

No one doubts that two Delaware tribes in Oklahoma have strong ties to Pennsylvania. But can those ties be used to open a casino in the state?

The tribes are basing their claim on a 315-acre tract that was deeded to a Delaware ancestor in 1733. They say the land was wrongfully taken from them but they don't want it back. Some landowners feel threatened anyway.

"I'd like to see the Indians get their way, but not on my property," a resident told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "The Indians could come and say that about any piece of land."

Gov. Ed Rendell says he won't negotiate with the tribes. But he supports putting slot machines at horse racing tracks.
