Okla. tribe brings slots to Kansas
FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2002

The Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma is moving forward with plans to open a casino in Kansas against objections from the state.

The tribe brought a reported 200 slot machines to a site in downtown Kansas City. The land is held in trust, a status affirmed by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb this year, which Chief Leaford Bearskin said allows a casino.

The state of Kansas has opposed a casino and filed suit against the Department of Interior regarding the land. Four Kansas tribes also oppose the casino.

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton is prohibited from approving any gaming on the land under an amendment included in her department's spending bill.
